Is your blog
optimized for
mobile devices?
A lot of recent studies suggest that mobile traffic
amounts to over 40% of the total internet traffic. It
is set to exponentially rise in the next few years
and will eventually surpass traffic through
computers. The trend is not the least bit surprising
since many studies now show that 31% of people
now rely on their smart phones to consume a
majority of their content on the web. This is the
reason you need to make sure your blog is
optimized for mobiles so that you do not start
losing a significant group of readers who access
your blog through their mobile devices. Also
Google announced early last month that it prefers
better optimized mobiles websites to their non-
optimized counterparts in its search results. In this
article we will help you figure out whether your
website is fit for consumption through mobiles
devices and in the next article we will suggest
simple implementable ways to optimize your site
for such devices.
One important thing which you need to do before
we dive into this topic is to figure out the
percentage of users who access your blog through
their mobile devices. Almost all analytical
services track this statistic. For instance in Google
Analytics, you can find out the percentage of your
blog’s traffic coming from mobile. Usually around
20% of your traffic is composed of mobile users but
it can vary significantly based on your reader
base.
Now that we have established the fact that
optimizing your blog for mobile is critical let us
find out how do we determine if a blog is optimized
for mobiles. The simplest way to do that is access
your blog through different kinds of smartphones
and tablets. The most common questions for non-
optimized blogs that you need to ask yourself are:
Do you have mobile ready
scrolling:
The text does not wrap as per the size of the
screen which results in user having to excessively
scroll to access information.
Do you have mobile ready
Zooming:
The font size of your blog might appear too small
when viewed on a smaller screen which forces the
user to constantly enlarge the text by zooming in
which results in more scrolling.
Do you have mobile ready
Images/Videos:
The size of the image/video is not configured to be
viewed on a smaller screen.
Do you have mobile ready Speed:
The blog takes up a lot of time to load on mobile
devices since the average connection speed is
lower on such devices.
Do you have mobile ready
Plugins:
It might be possible that all the sections of your
blog like the comments section or the archive
section do not work as expected on mobile
devices.

How to Go Mo by Google. In the PageSpeed
Insights page, enter in your website’s address and
click on “Analyze”. After which you will be shown
an image of how your website looks on a mobile
device. It will also give you a score for both mobile
users and for desktop users. It will also give you
suggestions on how to fix any issues that are
slowing your site down.
As you can see here at filesweed.blogspot. Com
we have a score of 96 for our desktop users(not
much we can do to beat that!), but we have some
work to do for our mobile users with only a 90, but
it tells us what to fix “Prioritize visible content”
and when we click the “Learn More” tab it lets you
know exactly what needs to be fixed. (Please note
that you should run this a few times to be sure you
are getting a good reading, especially if you are
using shared hosting.)
Now that you have identified your blog’s mobile
optimization score, in our next article we will
discuss steps to enhance your blog’s performance
on mobile devices.
Until then, happy blogging…
