Contact your doctor as soon as possible if you experience white patches on the tongue, or vaginal discomfort/itching or discharge. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including liver disease, blood disorders (e.g., clotting or bleeding problems), other infections (e.g., mononucleosis), allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. A severe reaction includes a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, or dizziness. If you experience difficulty breathing or tightness of chest; swelling of eyelids, face, or lips; or develop a rash or hives, tell your doctor immediately. Drug interactions Generic Augmentin may react with the antigout medication Benemid, resulting in changes in blood levels. A reaction with another antigout drug, Zyloprim, may cause a rash. Notify your doctor if you are taking either of these drugs. Augmentin can make birth control pills less effective. Use a second non-hormone method of birth control (such as a condom, diaphragm, spermicide) to prevent pregnancy while taking Generic Augmentin. With the help of Augmentin, you will feel better again in no time! Augmentin is also marketed as: Amoxicillin, Trimox, Wymox, Amox, Alphamox. This product is the genuine brand-name Augmentin from GlaxoSmithKline. Uses Augmentin is a penicillin-type antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. Augmentin is used in the treatment of lower respiratory, middle ear, sinus, skin, and urinary tract infections that are caused by certain specific bacteria. These bacteria produce a chemical enzyme called beta lactamase that makes some infections particularly difficult to treat. How to take Augmentin should be taken every 8 or 12 hours, depending on the dosage strength. It may be taken with or without food, but taking it with meals or snacks will help prevent stomach upset. Click for Live Support Side effects Side effects may include: Diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting may occur during the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication. Tell the doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: easy bruising or bleeding, persistent sore throat or fever, dark urine, persistent nausea or vomiting, severe stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing eyes or skin. This medication may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition (pseudomembranous colitis) due to a resistant bacteria. This condition may occur weeks after treatment has stopped. Do not use anti-diarrhea products or narcotic pain medications if you have the following symptoms because these products may make them worse. Tell the doctor immediately if you develop: persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping, or blood/mucus in your stool. Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new vaginal yeast infection (oral or vaginal fungal infection). Contact the doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms. A serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact the doctor or pharmacist. Precautions While Augmentin possesses the characteristic low toxicity of the penicillin group of antibiotics, periodic assessment of organ system functions, including renal, hepatic, and hematopoietic function, is advisable during prolonged therapy. A high percentage of patients with mononucleosis who receive ampicillin develop an erythematous skin rash. Thus, ampicillin-class antibiotics should not be administered to patients with mononucleosis. The possibility of super infections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be kept in mind during therapy. If super infections occur (usually involving Pseudomonas or Candida), the drug should be discontinued and/or appropriate therapy instituted. Drug interactions Probenecid decreases the renal tubular secretion of amoxicillin. Concurrent use with Augmentin may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of amoxicillin. Co administration of probenecid cannot be recommended. The concurrent administration of Allopurinol and ampicillin increases substantially the incidence of rashes in patients receiving both drugs as compared to patients receiving ampicillin alone. It is not known whether this potentiating of ampicillin rashes is due to Allopurinol or the hyperuricemia present in these patients. There are no data with AUGMENTIN and Allopurinol administered concurrently. In common with other broad-spectrum antibiotics, AUGMENTIN may reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives. Missed dose Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, and you take 2 doses a day, take the one you missed and the next dose 5 to 6 hours later. If you take 3 doses a day, take the one you missed and the next dose 2 to 4 hours later. Then go back to your regular schedule.
