Stallarium is free desktop enchantment software which gives you the ability to see real time renderings of the visible universe on your screen. Powered by free GPL code and OpenGL visual programming language, Stellarium can show you real and accurate view of the night sky with over 600 thousand catalogued stars, constellations, Milky Way, and other objects from the depths of entire universe. Because of its powerful databases and realistic visuals, Stallarium can often be found in real planetariums as showcase of the night sky and useful learning toll to all their visitors.
There are several ways you can enjoy all the data and visual splendors that are offered by Stallarium. Normally, first thing that anyone does is to load main view that looks at the full night sky, with astronomical information about not only your current view but also starts and objects that you are observing. Objects can be found either manually by clicking on them or using useful search function. Position of the viewer can be easily customized, both with position on Earth and the height from the level of the sea. Additionally users can view movements of the objects across our sky, or even showcase of the star field from the surface of the Mars.
Representation of the star fields can be enhanced with the showcase of the constellations, orbits and many other visual elements. As for constellations, there are 11 types of constellations you can draw on sky, from modern Western constellations to those of Maori, Navaho, Norse, Egyptian and Chinese.
Key Features of Stellarium:
Realistic simulation of the sky, sunrise and sunset
Default catalogue of over 600,000 stars
Downloadable additional catalogues for up to 210 million stars
Catalog data for all New General Catalogue (NGC) objects
Images of almost all Messier objects and the Milky Way
Artistic illustrations for all 88 modern constellations
More than a dozen different cultures with their constellations
